Methodists slate fundraiser to get original bell ringing again

Members of First United Methodist Church are kicking off fundraising to repair the church bell which has been silent since last spring.

The church will host a carryout meal Sunday, March 27, from 11 to 12:30 pm. The menu features the locally famous Lenten Luncheon chicken casserole, salads and dessert. Meals should be reserved by calling the church at 515-386-4411.

A church spokesperson reports the bell is from the original Methodist Church in Greene County, built circa 1868. The Ladies Mite Society purchased the bell at a cost of $200. The bell is still in great shape, but there are several large cracks in the support brackets. The brackets must be replaced before the bell can be put back into use.
